Westholme secures a five-figure Start Up Loan to launch thriving holiday let in Swaledale
Kitty White is a prime example of how the right funding can transform a dream into reality. With a five-figure Start Up Loan secured through Start Up Loans’ partner, Business Enterprise Fund (BEF), Kitty successfully launched and revitalised her holiday rental business in the picturesque Yorkshire Dales.

Kitty, who has a deep-rooted passion for hospitality, saw an opportunity to create a premium holiday rental experience in the heart of Swaledale. Based in Thwaite, in Upper Swaledale, she set her sights on Westholme, a well-established two-bedroom, dog friendly holiday let, with a strong reputation. The challenge was taking over an existing business, which comes with significant upfront costs, from operational expenses to renovation work.
While Kitty had the vision and dedication, she needed financial support to ensure the business could thrive. She turned to UMi (An Enterprise M3 Local Enterprise Partnership initiative)and the Growth Hub for guidance, which helped her secure funding through BEF and the Start Up Loan programme.
The Start Up Loan provided the critical funding Kitty needed to take ownership of the property and cover essential costs. Beyond the financial boost, BEF’s backing extended throughout the process, ensuring she was set up for long-term success through 12 months of mentoring and business support.
Kitty, whose background began in teaching before relocating to the Yorkshire Dales and supporting her partner with his holiday business. “I quickly realised how much I loved being in hospitality – from the attention to detail in preparing cottages, to ensuring guests have a memorable and relaxing stay. Over time, this grew from a supportive role to a true passion and Westholme is especially close to my heart as it was a place of retreat for me personally, before I became its custodian. I came with my dog Kali when I needed peace and space. That connection inspires me to ensure every guest feels the same sense of peace, comfort and belonging when they stay.
“The loan gave me the push I needed to get my business up and running, without it, I wouldn’t have been able to complete the renovation and take over the cottage business. The support I’ve received has been invaluable, and I feel confident about the future. My connection to Westholme means I’m now able to that same sense of calm and belonging with guests which feels incredibly meaningful.”

Now back up and running, Kitty is looking to grow Westholme’s revenue. Beyond income, Kitty’s business contributes to the wider local economy by attracting visitors to the Yorkshire Dales and enhancing the region’s tourism industry. “We’ve had 36 bookings in just six months, making £11,000 in revenue. It’s been especially rewarding to host both first time visitors and returning visitors who have fallen in love with the local area. Building relationships with local businesses and supporting the community is really important to me so it’s rewarding to see people return.
“Looking ahead, I’m hoping to increase year-on-year bookings by at least 20-25% while also diversifying our offerings. We’re excited to introduce guided walks throughout the Yorkshire Dales, partnering with mental health and wellbeing organisations which is something very close to my heart. It’s also important we continue to nurture our local relationships and ensuring our guests feel special and looked after.”
