Why you may not be eligible at this stage

Depending on your answers, one or more of the following may apply:

Your business is not based in England or Wales

Your business is not currently registered or trading in England or Wales. To be eligible for a Small Business Loan, businesses must be registered or actively trading in England or Wales. Unfortunately, this means we’re unable to move forward at this time.

Your business operates in an excluded sector

While we aim to support as many businesses as possible, some sectors are not eligible for a Small Business Loan. This includes businesses operating in gambling, adult entertainment, or mining.

The loan repayments may not be affordable

The estimated loan repayments may not be affordable at this time. We’re committed to responsible lending, which means making sure any borrowing is manageable and sustainable, helping to protect both you and your business from financial strain.

You have an active CCJ, IVA, or bankruptcy

We understand that financial challenges can happen. However, applicants for a Small Business Loan must have no active CCJs, IVAs, or bankruptcy arrangements. This requirement helps ensure that taking on new finance does not place additional pressure on you.

You’re unable to provide access to Open Banking

Secure Open Banking access is required to review financial information and carry out affordability checks. Without this access, we’re unable to continue with your application at this stage.

Other options for support

While we’re unable to support you at this time, there may be other organisations that can offer help and guidance.

  • You can also contact the government‑backed Business Support Helpline, which offers a free one‑hour consultation with an experienced business adviser. They’re available Monday to Friday, 9am–6pm, on 0800 998 1098.
